Sadly, various cheapo USB device manufacturers found they could save a cent or two by using USB-A sockets on their device instead of USB-B sockets. So the abomination that is a USB-A to USB-A cable was born. HDMI, and USB-C, are newer standards that are designed to have the same connector both ends. So they do have the built in negotiation.

I've cleaned my phone's connector once in two years compared to 2-3 times a year with my previous micro-usb phone. Regarding how well the connector fares over time, the specs call for 10000 insertion cycles, which are the most of any USB specs so far. IMO USB-C has a longer lifespan and is more durable than previous connectors.
I bought a 3-pack of "INIU" brand USB-C cables for pretty cheap on Amazon. Comes in 3 lengths, supports fast charging, and has a nice green LED light on them. I used them daily, one in my car, one on my PC, and one on my phone charger. I've had them for about year + with no problems.
