Puerto is one of the safer places. A very high proportion of cars are hire cars so you won't stick out. I don't know if your hotel has parking but finding street parking around it will be very hard. There is a shopping centre nearby that has parking but you need to pay at Av. Aguilar y Quesada, 1A, 38400 Puerto de la Cruz.
